Normandy and The Local Area

Explore Normandy from our gite

Normandy is made up of five departments, Manche, Orne, Calvados, Eure and Seine Maritime. All are very different yet steeped in history spanning from 280 BC with the Romans and reformation of the church, 1066 and the Battle of Hastings, 1431 and the death of Joan of Arc to 1944 and the Great Wars. To name but a few!

The culture and lifestyle of Normandy again differs by department yet each one is fascinating.

We reside in the Manche area that follows the coast from Cherbourg down to Mont St Michel, 'The Normandy Peninsula'. Our situation makes it accesible for the other departments to be reached in reasonable time and if you fancy a different feel altogether then pop over to Brittany for the day, again, accesible in 30 minutes drive.

The gastronomic delights are only part of this great area but whilst you are here you must sample some locally brewed Calvados, Pear Cider, Cheese, Foie Gras, Biscuits, Caramels, Cured Meats and of course the Moules et Frites and Wines.

As well as its History and Food, Normandy is renowned for its race horses and breeding.

Normandy has many long straight roads perfect for motorcycles, as Garry is a biker himself he can always point you in the right direction for an excellent ride out. It is a very popular pastime over here.
