4 X 4 Adventures in Normandy

fwdfwd - Off roading in Northern France

4 x 4 Landrovers
fwdfwd is based on the outskirts of Vire, an hours drive from the ferry port of Caen (with Brittany Ferries) or under 2 hours from Le Havre (with LD lines).

fwdfwd is run by Vaughn Bird. He is passionate about his Land Rovers and Range Rovers and spends a lot of time out and about designing and constructing new obstacles or discovering new green lanes to add to the database. Having worked as an ADI in England he now offers instruction on the off-road course for new and experienced drivers alike.

Martin (son), Kate (daughter-in-law) and Nemily (daughter) take care of the UK side of the operation but are often found on site helping out in a myriad of different ways.

We offer you 30 acres of purpose built off roading course which overlooks Lac Dathee, a man made reservoir built in the late 1970s to provide water to the local area in the event of drought. The lake is home to the ‘Centre Nautique’ and also a large bird sanctuary. It is popular with walkers too.

The off road course itself is suited to both the novice and the more experienced whose vehicle has been kitted out to cope with more extreme challenges. Or why not let the kids have a go. Providing they can reach the pedals we can arrange for one to one instruction in one of our vehicles (automatic Range Rover 3.9 – sounds scary but expert tuition is given and we always place safety first) with a Certificate of Achievement given afterwards as a souvenir to show friends or something to brag about at school. The whole experience has been designed to test the skill of both the driver and the vehicle. If at any time you should want to stop, get out of your motor and soak up the views – the site is perfect for stopping for a picnic or barbecue.

The off road site is just outside Vire in the commune of St Germain de Tallevende. The site overlooks Lac Dathee and the views are breathtaking; it is possible to see down to the Barrage which helps to regulate the level of the water. If you decide to visit I would recommend a closer look, especially when there has been plenty of rain! Nearby is the local golf course, currently 9 hole competition standard soon to become 18 holes; the extension comes right up to the edge of our course.

On the other side of the road is La Butte aux Cerfs literally translated to hill with Stags. (Huh – we’ve got wild boar on our land and have named one of the obstacles after them.) This is set high on the hill and is a complex of wood chalets. There is also a restaurant, particularly popular in the evenings with French and English alike.

Other opportunities

Why not bring the kids too and let them have the opportunity to drive on some bumpy ground? They will need to be tall enough to reach the pedals and see where they are going – ‘cos it helps!! We can do this in your 4x4 or one of ours!

Car clubs

Fancy a meet where it's less formal than your run of the mill English caravan park?? We have a barn if the weather is English (!), plenty of parking and can provide the framework for that annual meet. Why not email or give us a ring to chat about it?
